Stage 4
Please note - this is a trial of the Easy route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.
The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.
This easy route is 0.8 mile (1800 steps) taking 18 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.
Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existent so please take care - especially when crossing busy roads.
Once established, there will be much more historic information, quizzes and questions on the proposed web link and the boards themselves.
Bridge House – Annan Old Parish Church
The information board here will give information about this
entrance to Annan and the importance of the impressive building which
originally housed the first Annan Academy. It was the place where some famous
sons of the town were educated. There were other 'Parish' schools, but the
Academy was a fee paying establishment which taught classical subjects.
There were houses and shops in a block here where Port
Street now heads to the harbour. These were demolished to make way for a petrol
station forecourt and in the 1990s this was removed to build this relief road.
Imagine all the traffic which would have been travelling up and down the narrow
street located closer to the river bridge.
Directions: Safely cross the High Street near the
town hall. Walk the full length of the High Street
passing two sets of traffic light junctions until you reach Fish Cross and
Annan Old Parish Church
